Fangirl Yaye Discovers Brechtian Punk Cabaret

I love EVERYTHING about The Dresden Dolls! A power duo; female (Amanda) and male (Brian). Bold, idiosyncratic song structures. Equally cheesed off, irreverant, edgy and hilarious. These are my kind of peeps.

WARNING: This video contains adult language, some naked bottom and a dollop of pubes. Oh yeah, there is also pseudo slo-mo violence (god, I love the way Brian runs in slo-mo). I HIGHLY recommend watching ANY of their other videos; they're all just brilliant!!!

P.S.: "Spencer" refers to Spencer Smith, the drummer for PANIC! at the Disco.

Fangirl Yaye Discovers Eleni Mandell

A few weeks ago, I came across this video of Eleni Mandell live at The El Ray Theatre. I saved the page as a Bookmark so I could check her out when I had more time. Well, I have three major presentations due Monday, so naturally, I have wisely chosen today to follow-up.

I went by her website, her MySpace page, and watched a few of her videos on YouTube, and I have to say, I am really digging her! Retro, yet fresh; derivative, but she spreads it around enough to keep things interesting. She reminds me alternately of Suzanne Vega and Leonard Cohen, which often results in a Nick Cave-i-ness with a periodic vocal dollop of Bjork. Excellent all around.

I thought at first that she might be French or Canadian, because of the song above and her many Canadian tour dates. However, in visiting her site bio, I have discovered that she bought her first album on Melrose, experienced her first real kiss on Van Nuys Boulevard (standing in front of Straw Hat Pizza, no less!), and fulfilled a teenage dream by working with DJ Bonebrake of X (the significance of which I do NOT need to explain to Tallulah!)!!

HOME GIRL!

More Gravel, Less Shame

So, back when I was thinking of a Shame Party trifecta, I thought I'd move into the Joy zone and post Ani DiFranco's "Shameless," but since I'd already screwed up my ill advised theme, I decided to just post "Gravel." Ani is ALWAYS best LIVE!!!

What a wee bundle of bliss!

What's a party without the opiates?

Okay, I was going to post Morphine's song "Shame" - just keeping with a theme, peeps -- but I couldn't resist "Buena." Tasty, tasty, tasty!!!!!

PJ Party

Her music remains surprising and satisfying. Yaye lurves PJ!!!!!

P.S. -- If you want to watch any of You Tube's other PJ clips, I recomment PJ with Bjork doing "Satisfaction" and PJ with Nick Cave doing "Henry Lee" (never were two skinny, black haired, pasty-faced musical geniuses more perfectly matched!).
